What to expect when visiting Geneva

A fantastic city that offers something a little different to the usual European city break, Geneva is a great place for a school group to visit and be immersed in another culture.

When visiting Switzerland however, there are a couple of things that you should bear in mind to make your trip a little smoother.

Transportation

Getting around a new and unfamiliar country is always a little difficult at first. When travelling around Geneva, it’s best to remember:

  • If you’re arriving into Geneva via plane, you can collect a free 80-minute Geneva public transport card at the luggage zone. The card works across bus, tram, train and taxi-boat
  • Once you arrive at your accommodation you’ll then be able to arrange a free Geneva public transport card for the rest of your stay.
  • When travelling to different attractions around the city, the Geneva Pass allows access to over 50 of the main touristic attractions

Food and accommodation

When heading to restaurants and hotels in and around Geneva, it’s worth noting that:

  • It is common courtesy to leave tips in both restaurants and taxis – this could be anything from 5% to 15% of the final bill
  • Imported meats, like beef, are often quite expensive, so take the opportunity to try some of Geneva’s excellent array of meat-free dishes

General safety

Switzerland is one of the safest places in the world to visit, but as always, you should make sure to stay safe when heading there. Some things that should make you trip a little easier, are:

  • Geneva’s weather is extremely unpredictable, make sure to check the weather and pack accordingly for any event
  • The official Swiss languages include German and Italian, but the most predominant is French
  • Remember that at WST we have an experienced team to help you before, during and after your trip to ensure the highest of safety and support
