Local Heroes

Tour Introduction

Bringing History closer to Home

You don’t have to travel to the Front Line to explore the impact of the First World War. From the many headstones found in churchyards the length and breadth of the country, to the various museums and trench systems and memorials, its legacy is all around us.

Anglia’s Local Heroes programme provides you with a wonderful opportunity to explore this legacy close to home and to examine the war’s impact on communities across the UK. It also affords students a chance to develop the research skills they need as future historians and a chance for everyone to remember the sacrifices made by a generation.

Our 1-day itinerary is designed to be delivered within the parameters of a normal school day. It includes:

  • Great War Living History session delivered, in character, by our team of historical interpreters. Supported by an extensive selection of period uniforms, weaponry and kit, our team can cover a wide range of topics including:
    • Recruitment and drill
    • The development of the uniform and equipment
    • Treatment and care of the wounded
    • Trench warfare and routine – life in the trenches
    • New weapons – gas, the tank & the aeroplane
    • Trench raids
    • Military discipline – executions on the Western Front
  • A fully-guided tour of a local Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery, or burial plot led by one of Anglia’s our unrivalled team of expert guides. The themes covered in the tour will reflect the location visited but may well include:
    • Your town or city and its role in the First World War
    • Ethos and role of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission
    • Why were these men buried in the UK?
    • The British Expeditionary Force: the creation of Kitchener’s Army & Pals Battalions
    • The casualty evacuation chain
    • The Home Front
    • Using cemeteries as historical resource

With regional options covering much of the country, this really is the ideal way to encourage your students to engage with their local history.
