Studying the Great War gives your students a unique opportunity to understand the events and politics that went on to shape the 20th Century. At Anglia we have developed a range of itineraries for study tours to the Battlefields of Belgium and France. Not only do they cover these events in depth, your experienced guide will also unlock the poignant personal stories from World War 1 that bring your students closer to the subject and will stay with them for ever.
Our dedicated Tour Consultants at Anglia Tours will talk through with you what your learning objectives and preferred topics are and will work with your guide to produce a tailored itinerary designed to meet your objectives and budget.
For a focus on Surgery and Treatment on the Western Front we have developed one and two day tours to Ypres and the Somme, with visits that will cover this topic in detail. Your guide will take you to locations such as sites of key battles and casualty clearing stations, explaining the changes in warfare and how medicine had to develop to treat its casualties. Your students will each receive a Surgery and Treatment workbook that includes important facts, diagrams and raises questions for them to ask before, during and after their trip.
We have developed specific itineraries for WJEC Eduqas Thematic Study Option 2F: Changes in Health and Medicine in Britain c500 to the Present Day and Pearson Edexcel’s GCSE History Option 11: The British Sector of the Western Front 1914-18: Injuries, Treatment and the Trenches that will support your students learning on this topic.
If you are short on time, your Anglia guide will help you to pack in a range of visits in our One Day Battlefield Tour. With an experienced guide who knows the area well, you’ll be amazed at how much you can cover in such a short time. Alternatively, you can fit more into a Two Day Battlefield Tour. Study topics include causes and events of the first world war and the changing nature of warfare, whilst also allowing time for personal stories and reflection.
For a more in depth study visit we can arrange a Three or Four Day Tour where you will be expertly guided around Ypres, Somme and Arras, where you will learn more about the causes of the Great War, the trench system, the underground war and the impact of battle.
Anglia’s unique Christmas Truce Tour gives your students the opportunity to experience Living History with a re-enactment at the Hooge Crater Museum of this poignant moment in 1914 when for a brief period fighting stopped on the Western Front.
Your Anglia tour, should you wish, will build in time for personal pilgrimages should your students wish to follow in the footstep of ancestors or former pupils.
