Tour Introduction

Surgery and Treatment on the Western Front

Fully-guided battlefield tour

In June 2016 Pearson Edexcel, the UK’s largest exam board, formally endorsed the itinerary for our fully-guided Surgery & Treatment on the Western Front tour. To date, this is the first and only time an itinerary offered by a school tour operator has been awarded such an endorsement.

For those studying Pearson Edexcel’s GCSE History Option 11: The British Sector of the Western Front 1914-18: Injuries, Treatment and the Trenches, Anglia can offer a tour which ‘provides an engaging and relevant introduction to the warfare context and historical environment of Medicine on the Western Front. This tour will bring the topic alive for students, helping them to visualise the more physical problems of the environment in a way which a text book cannot.’

Unlike a standard battlefield trip this tour follows the route taken by a casualty from the front line, through a Regimental Aid Post and Advanced Dressing Station to one of the larger Casualty Clearing Stations behind the line.

With access to an extensive set of replica & period equipment, we look in detail at not only what treatment available but also the role of the medical personnel whose job it was to reduce the number of deaths.

The tour makes use of a range of contemporary documents, including letters, diaries & photographs and a each member of the group will receive a copy our bespoke Surgery & Treatment resource booklet.

We have also created a set of Surgery & Treatment flash cards which follow the casualty evacuation chain. These cards, which are available free of charge to all schools who book a Surgery & Treatment with us can be downloaded directly from our website via this link.

We are delighted to offer each school that books a residential tour with us a pre-tour presentation that will provide parents, guardians, students and staff an insight into exactly what the tour involves. The presentation will cover not only the locations the group will visit, the travel arrangements in place and the services included in the programme but also offers advice and guidance on what to take with you.

‘It was fantastic! Really focused on what we wanted. I loved the fact that we traced a specific soldier and their evacuation route after being injured on the western front, this will be really powerful in lessons.’ Downlands School
